Mentoring - What is it?
Effective ministry requires effective leadership. While we seek to disciple new believers often in our culture new leaders are not discipled.
This process – mentoring – does not usually occur in Bible school, or during early ministry. Consequently many church leaders today have never been mentored and with the time pressures of their own ministries there is little time to mentor others.
A mentor is one who has gone a couple steps ahead and can provide perspective, counsel, and insight – always with the intention of directing the mentoree to Christ. Mentoring is not a program, it is a process and lifestyle which, through modelling, directs others to Christ. While mentoring may include discipleship, it is primarily focussed on modelling and being a resource person helping the mentee in specific areas of life and ministry with encouragement, correction, and accountability.
What mentoring is NOT
The Mentor is not a parent, primarily a teacher, problem solver, or resident expert. He/she is one who comes along side of and models Christ for others to follow. The Mentor does not take the place of Christ and his leading in the mentorees life. Specifically in the context of ministry, a mentor is one who has gone a couple steps ahead and can provide perspective, counsel, and insight – always with the intention of directing the mentoree to Christ. Participants always determine the level of accountability they desire. The focus and dependency is always Christ and not others. Both the mentor and mentoree are learners together.
What mentoring IS
"And the things you have heard entrust to reliable men, who will then be able to teach others." 2 Timothy 2:2
"Mentoring is helping another person discover God's plan for his or her life and maximize their own unique impact for the kingdom" (Bob Logan).
Mentoring is not a program, it is a process and lifestyle which, through modelling, directs others to Christ.
Mentoring is more than discipleship – discipleship being defined as the process of helping someone live a daily life of sacrifice and obedience to Christ. While it does include this, mentoring is focussed on modelling and being a resource person helping the mentee in specific areas with encouragement, correction, and accountability – in this context, particularly the area of ministry and Christian service.
The goal of the mentoring process is to pass the torch to another generation, so that another generation of leaders are developed to reach their God-given potential to reach their generation for Christ.
Through this process leaders will be enabled to realize their full potential in their personal lives, family and ministries.
- Heart: character development – instilling the love, values, and passion of Christ in the leader
- Head: development of understanding, knowledge and wisdom in the leader
- Hands: developing the ministry and life skills of Christ in the mentoree so that they may more effectively fulfill the Great Commission.
Mentoring includes these three – Character, Skills and Knowledge – more than just personal discipleship, ministry skills, and head knowledge, it encompasses all three.
Perhaps this is something you have been longing for – Perhaps you have longed to have a framework to share your life with a young leader. Why not join others on this journey.
